Widespread Panic began their first of three homecoming/New Years shows on Sunday night, offering fans at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre the same raucous, hard-rocking energy that found them fame in Athens at the University of Georgia all those years ago. The Dec. 29 show marked the band’s 34th appearance at the Fox Theatre since their debut there in 1991.

The band’s opening “Good People”> “Dark Bar”> “Good People” segment got the sold-out crowd moving, and even included teases of “I Trusted You,” from their Andy Kaufman Halloween gag in New Orleans. WSP kicked things into overdrive with fan-favorite “Love Tractor” and later closed the first half with a solid trio of “Bear’s Gone Fishin’,” “Tall Boy” and “North.”

Panic wasted no time in set two, opening with a standalone “All Time Low” before sinking into a well-placed “Rebirtha” > “You Should Be Glad” jam. A mid-set cover of “Ophelia” gave guitarist/vocalist John Bell the chance to channel his inner Levon Helm, whereas a set-ending “Bust It Big” > “Use Me” > “Mr Soul” offered a slew of musical peaks and valleys for all six members to play with.

The encore featured two songs with “honey” in the title, “Geraldine and the Honeybee” and “Honeybee,” which sent fans home with a sweet taste in their mouths (and their ears).

Widespread Panic returns to the Fox Theatre tonight. Check out the full setlist from Dec. 29 below (via @widespreadpanichq on Instagram).
