On Dec. 29, Yo La Tengo closed out their eight-night Hanukkah run at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. The final show featured a performance from the mentalist Zebrecky and an opening set from Jon Spencer & the Hit Makers. Notably, Yo La Tengo’s entire set (besides the opener) featured special guest Bill Frisell on guitar.

The evening began with “Seven Day Weekend;” however, the band cheekily sung the song as “Eight Day Weekend” as a nod to their eight night run. Bill Frisell then took the stage for the remainder of the set, beginning with “Return To Hot Chicken.” Later, the band invited Rob Zebrecky (who performed as the mentalist earlier in the evening) to provide vocals for “The Days of Wine and Roses.” The penultimate song of the set, “I Heard You Looking,” featured Joe Puleo – who serves as YLT’s tour manager – on organ. The set closed with “I Feel Like Going Home.”

As Yo La has been wont to do this run, they packed the encore with a litany of covers and specials guests. The band began with a rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” with Laurie Anderson on violin. Anderson, who was married to the late Lou Reed, stayed on stage for a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Venus In Furs,” giving the cover an extra significance. Finally, the show closed in its traditional fashion, with Marilyn Kaplan, Ira’s mother, taking the stage to provide vocals on “My Little Corner of the World.”
