Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced that longtime guitarist John Frusciante will rejoin their lineup.
In a Dec. 15 post to social media, the band noted the departure of current guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, noting that “Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”
Frusciante is considered by many to be a member of the quintessential RHCP roster, alongside singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith. He performed with the band between 1988 and 1992, as well as 1998 to 2009, and contributed to classic LPs like Californiacation and Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
The announcement stressed the band’s “great excitement and full hearts” in bringing the guitarist back into the fold.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – with Frusciante – will headline both the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama and Boston Calling in Massachusetts this May.
