Soulive returned to Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday evening to open up the second weekend of Bowlive VIII, playing the fourth night of this year’s six-night run and welcoming several guests throughout the show, which also saw venue co-founder Peter Shapiro present the trio with keys to Brooklyn Bowl in celebration of 20 years of Soulive.

The trio kicked off the show with a few guest-less tunes before bringing out trumpeter Maurice “Mobetta” Brown, who added his horn to “PJ’s” and “Povo.” (Anderson .Paak, with whom Brown has recently toured, and .Paak’s tour opener, bassist Thundercat, were both spotted bowling at the side of the stage last night.) Guitarist Marcus King, the announced guest for the night, then emerged to help Soulive cover Blind Faith’s “Had to Cry Today,” followed by The Isley Brothers’ “Work to Do” and the blues standard “Sweet Lil Angel,” the last of which also featured guitarist Tash Neal and French harmonica player Frédéric Yonnet.

Soulive came out for the second set with two of their live staples, “Outrage” and “One in Seven” before welcoming out King again to play “Joyful Girl,” a tune that Soulive recorded with Dave Matthews (who played last night not too far from Brooklyn on Long Island). The set later closed out with an energetic cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post” with King and Yonnet. Soulive then rounded out the night with an encore performance of The Band’s “The Weight” with King, Yonnet and Neal.

Check out the full setlist below. Soulive return to Brooklyn Bowl tonight with bassist George Porter Jr.
