For many, Phish’s one-off gig at North Carolina’s PNC Music Pavilion could be considered a certified “Tweezer”-fest with the classic, high energy composition emerging three times over two sets, before coming back one last time for a “Tweezer Reprise” encore.

The show began with a reggae-fied “Have Mercy” and moved through “Gotta Jiboo” and “Free,” before kicking into overdrive with a killer pairing of “Ginseng Sullivan”> “Tweezer.”

Phish kept the improv coming by working their way into the evening’s first Kasvot Växt tune, the sing-songy “Passing Through,” with the crowd freely singing along.

A stand-alone “Ya Mar” came next, which was a clear nod to the phan standing in the pit with a hand-made sign suggesting the song.

Phish closed out the first half with a monster “Mercury” jam, bringing back “Tweezer” and finally ending on an equally high-energy “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.”

In a show filled with stand-out jams, the second set’s opening “Runaway Jim” was perhaps the greatest, exploring several musical avenues and seamlessly finding its way midway through “Scents and Subtle Sounds” and another, crowd pleasing “Tweezer.”

“Sand” popped up next, but the following “Lifeboy” pleased setlist statisticians the most (last heard 11/3/18, and marking its fifth appearance onstage in Phish’s post-2009, 3.0 era).

From there, Phish offered the first versions of “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing,” “Taste” and “Twenty Years Later” in 2019, and tossed in a set-closing “Possum” for good measure.

After newer favorite “More” to start the encore, they threw it back to “Tweezer” one more time with the previously mentioned, show closing “Tweezer Reprise” with guitarist Trey Anastasio strutting the stage and hopping around to express his excitement with Phish’s performance.

“Thanks everybody! Thank you!” Anastasio exclaimed one last time before departing the stage.

Phish’s summer tour continues this weekend with a two-night run at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
