Kicking off his spring tour, Mike Gordon offered a number of special song selections over two shows this weekend.
On Friday night in Atlanta, Gordon and company debuted “Acid Man” – an original by guitarist Scott Murawski – as well as “Infinite,” a number Gordon and Murawski co-wrote which Phish played twice last summer on July 21 at The Gorge and Aug. 7 at New Jersey’s BB&T Pavilion. The first half also included a pairing of Tame Impala’s “Mind Mischief” with Phish favorite/Talking Heads original “Cities” and a set closing version OGOGO standout “Victim 3D.”
Mike Gordon’s second half at the Variety Playhouse opened with another OGOGO track “Let’s Go,” and later featured the band’s first-ever version of Gordon/Murawski collaboration “Sughn Never Sets” followed by another debut, Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Ma’ker.” The set closed with Gordon’s Overstep cut “Say Something” and an encore of “How Many People Are You.”
On Saturday night in Asheville, NC, the debuts continued. After Mike Gordon opened with OGOGO‘s “Victim,” they played their first version of the Murawski-penned “Put Down The Phone.” Later, set one closed out with a pairing of a debut of “I Am Random” and OGOGO‘s “Go Away.”
Set two continued with Gordon’s “Whirlwind” and Max Creek favorite “Jones.” Later, the band played another new cut – dubbed “My Favorite Mistake” – and ended with a comprehensive “Surface”> “Crazy Sometimes” jam containing elements of “Frankenstein” and other television themes. The band encored with Rancid’s “Ruby Soho.”

March 14, 2019 at 1:46 pmLast year at Sunshine fest in St.Pete the band sounded good, but I thought it odd that he played a few covers of the covers his other bands usually play. Why not just play a Phish tune rather than a song Phish always covers. Weird choice.

March 11, 2019 at 2:53 pmMike is sounding better than ever, actually (above comments notwithstanding).
Setlist correction re: “Ruby Soho”–isn’t that a Jimmy Cliff song first?

March 10, 2019 at 8:07 pmRobert Plant he is not – decent bass player, terrible singer. Why not hire a real singer. I suppose the drugged-out faithful don’t even notice the crap coming out of his mouth.

March 11, 2019 at 12:05 pmAnd that’s not even to address the bland original material and the horrific choice of the worst Zeppelin tune this side of their blues ripoffs—Phish reunited in agreement to allow this!?!?!
