Mike Gordon made a surprise appearance during Maggie Rose‘s show at Nashville, TN’s Eastside Bowl last night. The bassist emerged during Rose’s show for a take on the Cranberries seasonally appropriate track “Zombie” and The Allman Brothers Band’s classic “Whipping Post,” which Phish covered on occasion early in its career. Rose also nodded to Halloween with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” on the stage, which was decorated for the occasion.
Gordon then returned during Rose’s encore for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” where he provided Vincent Price’s monologue from the original recording. At their first show, Phish’s set was famously cut short so college students could put on the Thriller album.
Rose, a Phish fan who connected with the band’s music through her husband and listened to the group often during the pandemic, invited Gordon out at Burlington, VT’s Nectar’s on September 11. On that night, he sat in on “You Should Be Dancing” and “Whipping Post.”
