Greensky Bluegrass brought their tour to The Fillmore in Detroit, MI, over the weekend for two shows at the venue, and the band had some fun with setlist creation and collaboration throughout the performances.

On Friday evening, Greensky nodded to their stay in the Motor City (and their home state) by spelling out “DETROIT” in the first set (from “Don’t Lie” to “Train Junkie”), followed by “MICHIGAN” in the second (“Miss September” to “No Idea”). The group then closed out night one with a circular-themed encore of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” back into the evening’s opening cut, “Don’t Lie.”

The next night, Greensky treated the Saturday crowd at The Fillmore to a different set of antics, filling the middle portion of their performance with a number of guest appearances from opener Billy Strings—including the titular frontman and guitarist, plus his three bandmates, banjoist Billy Failing, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and bassist Royal Massat. The two bands mixed and matched their lineups, starting with Strings and Failing joining GSBG for covers of “Little Maggie” and “I Second That Emotion.” An array of onstage lineups followed, with the collective running through compositions from both bands, including Strings’ “Meet Me at the Creek,” “While I’m Waiting Here” and “Dust in a Baggie.” The final tune of the collaboration was Greensky’s own “Demons” featuring Walker and his mandolin, and the headlining band later closed out their stay in Detroit with an encore of the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River.”
