Mike Dillon, best known in the jam scene as the drummer for Garage a Trois, has announced the surprise release of his new solo album, Bonobo Bonobo. The record was cut in New Orleans and features an expanded version of Dillon’s touring group, The Mike Dillon Band (re-christened The Mallet Men), as well as a slew of guests, including Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Givers vocalist/percussionist Tiffany Lamson, drummer Doug Belote, Nolatet bassist James Singleton, Brendan Bull and Ari Kohn of Brass Lighting, Miranda Lambert’s drummer G. Maxwell, Rickie Lee Jones’ guitarist Cliff Hines and O.A.R. touring trombonist Evan Oberla.
Bonobo Bonobo’s release coincides with the announcement of Dillon’s upcoming winter tour across the U.S., including four dates in Florida with Marco Benevento and two dates in Colorado with The Greyboy Allstars. He’ll share the stage with Clutch for a handful of dates in December, with Ten Hands on January 6 in Texas and with Solo for two shows, as well.
While touted as a punk-rock record, the album draws influence from a number of genres and scenes, from Krautrock to late ‘70s New York dance-rock. The press release goes so far as to call it a “fabulous and frenetic cornucopia of sound.”
Bonobo Bonobo is currently available for digital download via the label Royal Potato Family here and will be available on all major digital music purveyors next Friday, Dec. 21.
