In February 1975 during a hiatus for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia appeared with bluegrass outfit the Good Old Boys for a concert at Margarita’s Cantina in Santa Cruz, CA, and that show will be released on CD next week, December 18.
Garcia had produced an album for the group (recorded at a ranch belonging to his Dead bandmate Mickey Hart), which featured New Riders of the Purple Sage guitarist David Nelson, mandolinist Frank Wakefield and bassist Pat Campbell, but two of the band’s musicians were unable to play during a short supporting tour, leading Garcia to join them on banjo while Brantley Kearns sat in on fiddle.
The upcoming Good Old Boys Live album takes from this lineup of the band’s performances in Santa Cruz on February 20 and 21, 1975. Listen to a preview of the collection, “All the Good Times,” below, and pre-order the record here.
