After offering a preview of his new Wolf Bros project during a benefit in San Francisco this past weekend, Bob Weir and the trio—featuring bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane—officially opened up their inaugural tour on Tuesday night at the Grand Theatre at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, NV, offering two sets of tunes from throughout Weir’s career, including a few choice covers, as Weir celebrated his 71st birthday.

The night opened with a trio of tunes from the Grateful Dead catalog, “Jack Straw,” “Cassidy” and “Me & My Uncle,” followed by Weir’s more recent solo cut from his album Blue Mountain, “Only a River.” Next up was a cover of Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” and a throwback to Weir and Lane’s RatDog days with “Ashes & Glass,” which included an interpolation of Jesse Stone’s “Don’t Let Go,” which was played by Jerry Garcia Band. As Deadheadland notes, Weir addressed the crowd in the middle of set one, half-joking, “If you want exactly perfect, you’re going to have to wait two or three nights into this tour.”

Set two kicked off with a Weir favorite, “Peggy-O,” followed by a cover of “Me & Bobby McGee,” a song made famous by Janis Joplin. The trio then dipped back into the Dead catalog with “Bird Song,” “Corinna” and “The Music Never Stopped,” which continued the covers with a segue in and out of The Temptations’ “Shakey Ground.” Another Dylan tune, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” then preceded the classic Dead run of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” to close the set, and the trio later returned to the stage for an encore of “Touch of Grey.”
