Keyboardist John Medeski’s new project Mad Skillet have announced that they will release their self-titled debut album on November 9 via Medeski, Martin & Wood’s own label, Indirecto Records.

The group, which teams Medeski with guitarist Will Bernard and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band rhythm section of sousaphonist Kirk Joseph and drummer Terrence Higgins, came together through a number of after-shows during New Orleans’ annual Jazz Fest. Medeski also produced DDBB’s 1999 album Buck Jump.

“Something happens there. There’s something in the air, the water, the food,” Medeski says of the late-night New Orleans collaborations. “Every time we play, it really is magical. We get together and this thing lifts. It has a life of its own, beyond any of us. There’s a lot of ESP in New Orleans music. There’s a certain feel that New Orleans guys have that you can’t get anywhere else.”

Below, listen to the first single from Mad Skillet, “Invincible Bubble,” a tune written by Medeski as a tribute to his step-daughter, and see the group’s November tour schedule.
