Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have just embarked on a summer tour that will run through June 29th in Minneapolis. Opening the trek last night at Evansville, IN’s Ford Center, the band set the tone for a tour full of deep cuts by kicking off their set with a rare cover of The Byrd’s “So You Want To Be a Rock and Roll Star.” The cavalcade of infrequently played covers continued with a take on Muddy Waters’ “I Just Want To Make Love To You,” followed by the live debut of the Traveling Wilbury’s “Tweeter and the Monkey Man.” The rest of the set consisted primarily of a mix of Heartbreakers hits, peppered with the inclusion of the Damn The Torpedoes track “Louisiana Rain,” which hadn’t been performed live since 1989. The tour continues tomorrow night with the band’s appearance at the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, AL.
