Umphrey’s McGee debuted a number of songs over the weekend. On Thursday night, the group headlined Charlotte, NC’s The Fillmore and kicked things off with the new original “Gurgle.” The group moved to Columbus, OH’s LC Pavilion on Friday night and debuted a cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Burnin’ for You” during their second set. The debut trend continued at Detroit, MI’s The Fillmore on Saturday night when the group busted into an area-appropriate version of Kiss’ “Detroit Rock City” during their encore. On Saturday night, saxophonist Nicholas Gerlach—who opened the night with Twin Cats—also appeared on a cover of Hall & Oates’ “Maneater.” Umphrey’s McGee has covered the classic Yacht Rock song in the past and both bassist Ryan Stasik and guitarist Brendan Bayliss had a chance to play the number with John Oates himself aboard Jam Cruise last month as part of the Omega Moos.

In other Umphrey’s McGee news, the Chicago-based band are featured on the March cover of Relix. For the band’s first Relix cover since 2004, veteran music scribe Richard Gehr spent time with all six members of the band as well as their extended crew for a state of the union on the jamband stalwarts. To find out why keyboardist Joel Cummins was placed in “setlist jail,” how percussionist Andy Farag ended up working with a hot sauce company and which band member’s “boys can swim,” be sure to order the March issue today.
