As promised, The Allman Brothers Band performed their classic album Eat a Peach in its entirety during their second set at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre last night. The only exception was the album’s last track, Duane Allman’s “Little Martha,” which guitarist Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks performed as a duet during the show’s encore. The Allman Brothers Band’s current lineup had previously played the album in its entirety on September 28, 2004 at Washington, DC’s XM Performance Theatre as part of the satellite station’s Then…Again…Live series.

While most of Eat of Peach ’s tracks are staples in The Allman Brothers Band’s live repertoire, Dickey Betts’ classic “Blue Sky” is a relative rarity for the group. The Allman Brothers Band dropped it from their setlists after Betts was fired from the group in 2000 (to this day the band does not play most of Betts’ signature vocal songs). The Brothers reworked “Blue Sky” with Gregg Allman on lead vocals for their XM performance in 2004 and played the song a few more times in late 2004 and early 2005 before it fell out of rotation once again. In recent years, the Brothers have riffed on an instrumental version of the song, and Haynes led Furthur through the tune earlier this year. As many fans hoped, the group revived “Blue Sky” last night during their Eat a Peach performance with Allman once again on lead vocals.

The show’s first set also included some treats. After opening the night with “Revival” and “Sailin ‘Cross the Devil’s Sea,” Oteil Burbridge played his ABB predecessor Allen Woody’s bass on “Soulshine.” Later in the night, Max Creek/Mike Gordon Band guitarist Scott Murawski also emerged for a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Who’s Been Talkin.” Murawski and Burbridge played together in Bill Kreutzmann’s trio for a short period of time.

The Allman Brothers Band will return to the Orpheum on Friday.
