In 1968 studio musician Mac Rebennack cut an album entitled Gris-Gris during which he created a new identity as Dr. John, The Night Tripper. Gris-Gris blended New Orleans musical and cultural traditions with a dose of psychedelia and when he first performed this material, Rebennack did the same. Next month at Bonnaroo, for the first time since the early 70s, Rebennack will return to the Night Tripper persona (for which he applied face paint and donned a Mardi Gras style-costume) during a late night set. This performance is billed as part of a New Orleans themed event that will also include Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk which features an all-star cast of some of the city’s finest musicians. The Rebirth Brass Band will also join in, lending their celebratory brass band sound to what will be an unforgettable night. As for Rebennack, it would be far too easy to say that odds are he wont be the only Night Tripper that evening but, well…odds are he wont be the only Night Tripper that evening.
