Last night at the Warfield in San Francisco, the next incarnation of the Dead took the stage for two sets. Joan Osborne and Rob Barraco are no longer with the group, while Warren Haynes is now in the mix. Haynes, who jetted out to SF on a day-off from the Gov’t Mule/Kid Rock tour, built on the guitar interplay he has developed with Jimmy Herring in Phil and Friends and also sang lead on a number of compositions he does with the quintet, including ‘Built To Last,’ ‘Just A Little Light’ and ‘Terrapin Station.’ In addition, Haynes served as lead vocalist on Leshs ‘All That We Are’ (a role assumed by Joan Osborne for the songs Dead debut although Haynes has sung it with Phil & Friends) as well as a cover of Elton John’s ‘Madman Across the Water’ which Haynes has performed on occasion over the years with Govt Mule and in his acoustic shows. The Dead has announced that it will tour over two legs this summer although the dates still remain unannounced.
