AJ Ghent’s family is basically lap-steel royalty. His great uncle Willie Eason and grandfather Henry Nelson helped establish the “sacred steel” tradition of using the lap-steel guitar in church services, and his father Aubrey Ghent continued and expanded the tradition, eventually passing it down to AJ. The younger Ghent, in turn, is keeping it in the family with the AJ Ghent Band, which includes his wife MarLa and sister Tiffany. The group’s first release is a CD/DVD compilation that showcases their concert at Atlanta’s Terminal West. The 11-song album is a relentless, high-energy romp through gospel, soul and funk-infused landscapes, with a couple of cool-down moments just so the audience can catch their collective breath. AJ is at the head of the revival-tent celebration, leading the six-piece band through breakdowns and jams—including one, “Keep on Working Jam,” that was so epic it required a separate track listing from the song it accompanied.
