Usually a regular stop along Phish’s summer tour, the band returned to Alpine Valley for the first time since 2012 last night as they kicked off a two-night run at the Wisconsin venue.

The show saw Phish hit on many of their live staples and current new favorites as they opened the show with the newer “No Men In No Man’s Land.” Additional tunes throughout the set included upbeat rockers like “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” and “Julius” as well as the tour debut of “Frankie Says.” The newer “Mercury” also appeared in the first set along with a “Reba” with a whistling ending and the 500th appearance of “Possum.”

The second set began with a common “Down with Disease” opener before Mike Gordon started up the opening notes to “Halley’s Comet.” While going away from its jam vehicle tendencies in the 1.0 and 2.0 eras, this version of the tune stretched just a bit farther than it normally does in the current era before heading into “Twist.”

After a fairly straightforward “Twist,” the band stretched their legs a bit on “Light” with some ambient improv before dropping into another tour debut in “What’s the Use?” which made its first appearance in 30 shows. The show closed with a run that included “Fuego” and “Backwards Down the Number Line” before Anastasio took control on the “Slave to the Traffic Light” finale. The band returned for a two-song encore with a fun “Meatstick” and the rock ending of “Character Zero.”

Phish returns to Alpine Valley tonight.
