Tom Morello’s Power To The People Festival debuted at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD on Saturday. Morello enlisted numerous notable players to participate, including Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, Foo Fighters, Stephen Stills, Public Enemy, Geezer Butler, Dropkick Murphys, Nathaniel Rateliff, Serj Tankian, Cypress Hill, The Linda Lindas, State Radio, Jack Black, Killer Mike and Scott Ian.

Power to the People featured numerous collaborations on songs that shared a common theme about the nature of democracy and protesting autocracy.

Bruce Springsteen’s closing set drew together a number of guests artists. Morello who has toured in Springsteen’s band as of late, was on hand for much of the set. In addition, Baez joined Bruce for the Bob Dylan cover “Chimes of Freedom.” Dave Matthews and Nathaniel Rateliff appeared on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” Matthews and Dave Grohl were in on Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Then the full ensemble of musicians appeared for Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and John Lennon’s “Power to the People.”

During his set, Morello was the proper host inviting numerous artists to the stage. Serj Tankian appeared on the Audioslave tune “Like a Stone.” Chuck D & B-Real guested on the Public Enemy’s “Prophets of Rage.”Darryl “DMC” McDaniels came out for Run‐D.M.C.’s “It’s Tricky.” Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” also featured DMC, Scott Ian, Chuck D, B-Real, Sen Dog, and Jack Black. Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” had Flavor Flav, Chuck D, B-Real, Sen Dog and DMC. Dave Grohl appeared for the KISS classic “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Jack Black led a Black Sabbath tribute set with a group of teenagers, including Morello’s son Roman, Ian’s son Revel, Yokoya Soma, and Hugo Weiss. They performed “Mr. Crowley” and “The Wizard” before Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler emerged for “War Pigs.”

Other memorable moments included Rateliff and Baez performing “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)” and “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round,” Stephen Stills, Morello and Rateliff digging in on “For What It’s Worth” and Preservation Hall Jazz Band guesting with the Foo Fighters on Mose Allison’s “Young Man Blues.”
