Umphrey’s McGee celebrated the 40th birthday of Brendan Bayliss with a show at Burlington, VT’s Higher Ground that included a few unique twists on originals as well as the revival of one of the guitarist’s favorite covers.

For starters, the band let Joel Cummins take lead vocals on the final section of “Syncopated Strangers,” one that is typically reserved for Bayliss. The guitarist did lead the band on the newer tune “Gone for Good” before busting out the Modest Mouse cover “The Good Times Are Killing Me” for the first time since the April 28, 2012 fan-voted show at Martyrs in Chicago.

Additional highlights from the show included the first “Crucial Taunt” since 2014. The song, which debuted at Summer Camp in 2012, was played in fairly heavy rotation over the two years before dropping off completely. The encore of “All in Time” was also peppered with one of the more beloved and lesser-played Raw Stewage selections, “Gravity’s Real,” which was pulled from the September 14, 2012 “All in Time” played at Red Rocks.

Umphrey’s tour continues in Boston tonight.
