On Dec. 31, Umphrey’s McGee closed their three-night New Year’s Run at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta. The evening saw three sets with the ensemble–comprised of Brendan Bayliss, Joel Cummins, Ryan Stasik, Andy Farag, Jake Cinninger and Kris Myers–once again joined by Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret Horns, this time on all three sets.
They opened the set of the final show of their New Year’s Run with 2003’s “Dump City” before moving into “40’s Theme,” which was also released in the same year. Next came “Utopian Fir,” which included a quote from Metallica’s “Sad But True.” As the song melded into “It’s Not Your Fault,” Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret Horns took to the stage, and the players–Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet, Jeff Coffin on saxophone, Josh Kline, and Spencer Merk–stayed on for the set closer “Hiccup.”
They started the second set with fan favorites “Hurt Bird Bath” and “The Floor.” The horns rejoined for “Half Delayed” and stayed on for the debut of The Blues Brothers’ “B” Movie Box Car Blues,” before helping round the frame out with a penultimate “Uncommon” and set closer “Red Tape.”
The third and final full set of the evening started with Umphrey’s McGee sans the horn section with “Glory,” but the Mad Dog and his crew quickly rejoined the stage for a jam of “Peeps” into “Auld Lang Syne” into “Escape Goat.” After a short pause and much applause, Umphrey’s McGee moved into a pairing of “Attachments” > “Day Nurse.” Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret Horns then returned for “Fenced In” and assisted Umphrey’s McGee with their live debut of Player’s “Baby Come Back” to close the set. During the frame, 2023 was properly rung in, balloons had fallen from the ceiling, and cheers echoed through the venue.
Umphrey’s McGee took a short break before returning to the stage for an encore of “In The Kitchen,” after which the horn section returned for their final song: the debut of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Africano.”
