“It’s Phish in Mexico time!” Trey Anastasio exclaimed at Phish’s Riviera Maya event, in the midst of the band’s first “Shake Your Coconuts” since the Baker’s Dozen.

And while it was Phish’s second performance of the Junior Senior song ever (LTP 721/17, show gap: 100), “Shake Your Coconuts” was not the most noteworthy setlist stat from Phish’s single set on Thursday night.

An opening version of The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St. cut “Torn And Frayed” was certainly a surprise for the phans gathered at Cancun’s Moon Palace resort, having last made an appearance on a setlist in July 2012 (show gap: 285).

It was also a matter of time before a tease of Anastasio’s “Rescue Squad” snafu arrived. The impromptu shout-out came through the lengthy jam section of “Free,” alongside samples of “Your Pet Cat” and the venue-appropriate “Shipwrecked” from Phish’s beloved Chilling Thrilling material.

Later, a seamless transition from “The Landlady”> “Destiny Unbound” took the band back to their ’90s roots; they shelved the pairing in 1991, after offering it for 16 straight shows. This marked the first time the two tracks were placed side by side since 11/15/91.

A wide-spanning “Steam”> “Crosseyed and Painless”> “Run Like an Antelope”> “Cavern”> “Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1″> “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” segment closed out Phish’s single set in Mexico, with a number of ups and downs.

Similarly, a loose “You Enjoy Myself” closed the night, offering no doubt the vacationing audience had one hell of a good time.

Phish’s sold-out Riviera Maya event will continue this weekend with shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
