The fate of The Dunhams Radio Program hangs in the balance following a format change at the parent station. Atlanta’s Z93 has changed to ‘The Dave’ which may well result in the cancellation of the program. However, this past Sunday, musicians and fans of the show packed Smiths Olde Bar to celebrate the program.
Kevn Kinney was on hand and joined the Ralph Roddenbery Trio on lead acoustic guitar during their early set for Thats Gonna Leave a Mark and Away. Kinney then performed a full, mostly electric set with his current Sun-Tangled Angel lineup which includes Bryan Howard (Slackdaddy) on bass and Dave W. Johnson (Drivin + Cryin, Slave Davies) on drums. The STAR set included Madmen Blues and Land of Plenty and the title track from STARs forthcoming eponymous release. Kinneys son Tyler grabbed a harmonica and joined his dad for many songs, including 40 Miles Of Mountain Road, Blues On Blues and the aforementioned Land of Plenty.
Ralph Roddenbery performed two sets sandwiched around Kinneys 80 plus minute set. During his first set, he delivered updated versions of many songs from his Live at Tree Sound Studios CD, as well as newer material like You Got Me Going, Swimming In It, Sister Mama and the Get Somethin Done which opened the set. Roddenberys first set was performed in trio format with Brian Ashley Jones (Donna Hopkins Band) on mandolin and Richie Jones (Donna Hopkins Band) on trap drum.
While The Dunhams weekly daytime gatherings are currently not endorsed by the radio station, they will for now continue to occur every Sunday at Smiths Olde Bar. This coming Sunday the Stranger String Band, Rev. Jeff Mosier and Wayside Riders will help celebrate Jerry Garcias Birthday, and the following Sunday Common Rotation and Hobo Lingo will be featured in an acoustic Dunhams In The Daytime.
