Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and his longtime collaborator, tabla master Zakir Hussain, have been hired to help retool the Volcano which sits outside The Mirage hotel in Las Vegas. The Volcano, which first erupted in 1989, is now being overhauled and ‘an all-new audio/visual spectacle’ will be created with the aid of Hart and Hussain.
‘To put percussive sound to the image of fire and have it dance around a lagoon is something I’ve never done; I’ve never birthed a volcano,’ Hart explains in a release, ‘Zakir and I immersed ourselves in the legends and myths and studied what really makes a volcano work. The result, a true union of the senses, will rattle your bones, just like a real volcano.’ The Volcano will feature a new Meyer sound system when it is completed later this year.
