Best known as half of the Adult Swim comedy duo Tim & Eric, Tim Heidecker has been enjoying some independence as a musician as of late. Earlier this week, he even joined psychedelic indie outlet The War on Drugs for two shows over their Pennsylvania holiday run (dubbed “Drug-Cember To Remember”).

War on Drugs frontman Adam Granduciel welcomed Heidecker to help open the band’s Dec. 19 Philadelphia gig with “Arms Like Boulders,” a cut off the band’s debut album Wagonwheel Blues. The rest of the show featured mostly War on Drugs material, pulling newer tunes like “Pain” and “Strangest Thing” off 2017’s Grammy-winning, A Deeper Understanding as well as an unexpected cover of John Lennon’s “Mind Games.”

Night two (Dec. 20) at Philly’s Union Transfer featured a “Mind Games” repeat, but no guests. The band bookeneded the show with “Brothers” off 2011’s Slave Ambient and “In Chains” off the aforementioned A Deeper Understanding.

The final evening of Drug-Cember to Remember was held on Dec. 21 at Upper Darby, PA’s Tower Theatre. The band opened with “Holding On” and featured a mid-set return by Heidecker on his own original “Hot Piss” (released with his band Yellow River Boys). The comedian stuck around to play guitar on The War on Drugs’ live debut of Tom Petty’s “Straight Into Darkness.”

The War on Drugs ended their three-night run “Lost in the Dream,” the title track of their acclaimed 2014 LP.
