Bill Wyman sticks close to Bob Dylan’s musical template in opening Drive My Car with “Thunder on the Mountain,” though his whisper of a voice is overwhelmed by the tangled groove, which is reprised on the following title track.

That one is not the Beatles tune, but an original composition by the 87-year-old former Rolling Stones bassist. Like the song, Drive My Car is a fun little record – nothing hefty, but benefiting from the extra weight Wyman’s name adds to the project.

It’s not Stonsey in any way – Wyman’s long left behind his former band’s sound, today twisting a mix of Backless-era Eric Clapton, early Dire Straits and 21st-century Dylan into something that’s both an homage and a new thing for the restless musician and one-time Rhythm King.
