Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Sun, Sand and Soul Weekend opened on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Miramar Beach. The third annual festival came amid the group’s support for their latest studio endeavor and the resulting set, Future Soul, which was reflected in the evening’s choice of material. As a special feature of the ensemble’s latest performance, they concluded their appearance with a cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?” The delivery nodded to Dave Mason, the song’s key contributor, who passed away on Sunday, April 19.

Thursday’s festival frame began with a three-piece Future Soul suite that consisted of “Crazy Cryin’,” “I Got You,” and “Who Am I,” before an ensuing cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.” Next, they returned with an original “Do I Look Worried” before running through a series of other people’s music, such as Ann Cole’s “Got My Mojo Working (But It Just Won’t Work on You),” Derek and the Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues,” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”

The evening continued with title tracks “Let Me Get By” and “High & Mighty” before the next batch of covers: Frank Zappa’s “Willie the Pimp,” and a two-piece Sly & the Family Stone nod via “You Can Make It If You Try” > “Everyday People.” The group returned to material from their latest LP next, performing “Soul Sweet Song” before Tedeschi’s own “Just Won’t Burn.” For the main frame’s final features, Tedeschi Trucks Band started up “I Want More” and segued into Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”

Next, the group used their encore to pay tribute to the late Dave Mason, who passed away earlier this week, by delivering his beloved Traffic contribution, “Feelin’ Alight?” Notably, the TTB debuted the track on Sept. 11, 2015, during the LOCKN’ Festival, with Mason on vocals. The first-time play arrived during a set that was billed as Mad Dogs & Englishmen: Celebrate Joe Cocker. Since Tedeschi Trucks Band’s aforementioned debut, the track has remained a rarity for the group, which has covered it on occasion over the past 11 years, five times total.

After opening the festival last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band will take a night off before Saturday’s ensuing return to the Sun, Sand and Soul Weekend stage.
