Today, venerable musician, composer, and decorated bandleader Bruce Hornsby has unveiled the second single off his forthcoming album, Indigo Park, due on April 3 via Zappo Productions/Thirty Tigers. Titled “Ecstatic,” the latest preview represents a musical reunion for Hornsby and Bonnie Raitt, who lends her harmonies on the new track, bolstering a relationship that ties back to their first collaboration on the songstress’ 1991 hit, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
“Ecstatic” plays like an elevated chant, with the intention of excavating the sensation of life’s peak experiences–those that cause the heart to flutter with a cunning realization of stepping outside the boundary of normalcy, seeking change, and taking on challenges. On the track, Hornsby is accompanied by his beloved Noisemakers band, who support and propel the composition forward with tenacity and expertise of seasoned experts. Raitt compels the listener, laying down a blanket of harmony that forces an afterthought of independent range; the voice in your head that unconsciously negotiates with emotional highs and lows of simply existing.
In addition to the sonic arrival of the track, Hornsby has also turned over the official music video for “Ecstatic,” rooted in his own title of basketball dad. A participant of the game and follower of the sport, the bandleader tapped members of the LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball Team to take part in the on-campus visual equalizer. Notably, Hornsby’s son is a former LSU shooting guard and the current graduate assistant for the LSU Tigers men’s team. The track’s chant-like flow was inspired by time spent cheering from the stands and sidelines.
As a whole, Indigo Park ticks many stylistic boxes, spanning rock, bluegrass, jazz, classical, electronic, and beyond. On the album, Hornsby has enlisted help from a range of talented artists and collaborators, including the late Bobby Weir, who aided the forthcoming track “Might As Well Be Me, Florinda,” also featuring Blake Mills. In addition to Raitt’s aforementioned role, other contributors on the new record include Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
Indigo Park was composed as Hornsby hit his 70th birthday, inspiring a new wave of reflection, rooted in first-person observations, as “He contemplates formative moments from his past, sometimes trying to resolve them, and other times looking for clues about his current-day outlook,” according to the official press release.
In addition to new music, Hornsby has delivered a series of new tour dates in support of the forthcoming record. View the live schedule below.
