Future Ruins, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ music festival centered on composers, has been cancelled. Originally announced by the Nine Inch Nails leaders in May and booked for Nov. 8 at Los Angeles’ Equestrian Center, the event planned to feature performances from 16 celebrated composing artists, duos and groups working in film and television, including John Carpenter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Questlove (performing the scores of Curtis Mayfield), Goblin, Terence Blanchard, Danny Elfman and the organizers. A message shared by the festival’s social channels described the cause of the cancellation as “logistical challenges.”
“Unfortunately Future Ruins will not move forward this year,” the event’s announcement reads. “The reality is, due to a number of logistical challenges and complications, we feel we cannot provide the experience that’s defined what this event was always intended to be. Rather than compromise, we’re choosing to re-think and re-evaluate. Meanwhile, we are sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate all the interest and support.”
Future Ruins was advertised as a first-of-its-kind event, emphasizing the transportive storytelling power of score music in a live, collective environment. Despite its distribution across three stages on the grounds, the festival made a point of eschewing some of the underlying dynamics of typical music festivals to present each celebrated artist and their work on neutral, immersive terms.
“It’s about giving people who are, literally, the best in the world at taking audiences on an emotional ride via music the opportunity to tell new stories in an interesting live setting,” Reznor said with the event’s initial announcement. “There’s no headliner. There’s no hierarchy. This is a stacked lineup of visionaries doing something you might not see again.”
While Future Ruins’ uncertain future revokes the possibility of seeing many of the billed artists on stage, there’s no shortage of opportunities to experience Reznor and Ross’ music. Nine Inch Nails concluded the 2025 leg of their celebrated Peel It Back Tour two weeks ago, and last night the band took the stage alongside Boys Noize for the world premiere of Tron: Ares. Celebrating the arrival of the first film scored by the band, rather than its core duo (who recently took home the 2025 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for their work on Challengers), NIN and the German producer performed three songs from the soundtrack, as well as a new remix of 2007’s “The Warning.”
Last week, Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize announced a 22-date collaborative extension of the Peel It Back Tour, crossing the country from Feb. 5 to March 16 of next year; they’re also billed as Nine Inch Noize on the lineup for Coachella 2026. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow, Oct. 8, at nin.com.
