Each era of bluegrass symbol, Peter Rowan’s career will be honored in song on January 23, 2026, at the Mother Church in Nashville. The evening has been titled Decades in Song: Celebrating the Eras of Peter Rowan, and is billed to feature Sam Grisman Project, special guests Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan and Bryan Sutton, and more lauded players from the region who have signed on to take the stage and stand beside one of the greats while honoring his bank of originals, which include standards, “Panama Red,” Bill Monroe co-write “Walls of Time,” “Midnight Moonlight” and more.

Sam Grisman, the son of bluegrass legend and mandolin virtuoso David “Dawg” Grisman–Rowan and Jerry Garcia’s bandmate in Old & in the Way–has been supporting Rowan on the road, offering specialty evenings fixed around classics from the genre’s songbook. He shared a comment about the upcoming event, writing: “It is a great honor and joy to be returning to the Mother Church @theryman in Nashville alongside our hero, the Great @peterrowanmusic this January. This time around, we will be celebrating every era and corner of Peter’s tremendous catalog alongside a cast of heroes and friends. We look forward to seeing y’all there!”

Joining Sam will be frequent collaborators, Dominick Leslie, Phoebe Hunt, Nat Smith, Victor Furtado, John Mailander, Gina Leslie and Sam Leslie, as well as very special guests Lindsay Lou and Kyle Tuttle.

Rowan walked onto the scene in the mid-1950s and assumed a slot in support of Bill Monroe by the early ‘60s, as a member of the Blue Grass Boys, where he mastered the foundations of the genre before infusing progressive practices into the craft during his Earth Opera era with Dawg. The band Seatrain, which Rowan co-founded, consumed his time before Old & in the Way brought together the greats, including the aforementioned Grisman and Garcia, joined by Vassar Clements and John Kahn.

Rowan’s career included a solo chapter, featuring his own self-titled bluegrass band, as well as participation in other projects, such as Big Twang Theory and The Free Mexican Airforce. The latest pages of Rowan’s efforts have involved playing with the next generation of bluegrass torchbearers through joint tours with the Sam Grisman Project.
