On Saturday, March 8, Trey Anastasio commenced night one of his solo acoustic tour at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass. The concert marked the guitarist’s first appearance after playing on the Beacon stage as a part of the ninth annual Love Rocks NYC event, where he got acquainted with the Goddess of Pop, Cher. To mark their nascent friendship, Anastasio debuted the Sonny and Cher classic, “I Got You, Babe,” and even adjusted the lyrics to reflect their meeting.
Before the aforementioned homage to the pop icon, Anastasio used his concert framework to work in various Phish and solo songs, delivered stripped-down and acoustically. To that effect, he created a motif with the placements of the first four numbers by weaving from Phish originals to Lonely Trip pulls: “Sample in a Jar,” “Lost in the Pack,” “Free” and “Evolve.” After the initial song segment, the artist introduced “I Got You, Babe,” into his live repertoire. Harkening on the happenstance of their meeting, Anastasio tweaked the lyrics: “I’ve got you for long romantic walks, I’ve got you at Love Rocks,” to the elation of cued in audience members.
Night one continued with a flow of Phish songs, intercepted by a concert rarity, the first “Sunset” since Aug. 20, 2022, before resuming the regulatory trickle with “Twist” and “Backwards Down the Number Line.” Next, Anastasio welcomed pianist Jeff Tanski up for the final batch of songs to land during the concert’s main frame, including the first acoustic “Petrichor,” “Secret Smile,” “Pebbles and Marbles and a set ending “Stash.” Solo again, Anastasio performed “Strange Design” and “Possum” to start the night’s encore, eventually adding Tanski for the final song, “Harry Hood.”
On Saturday, March 9, Anastasio’s continued his tour at Boston’s Wang Theater at Boch. The night began with all solo acoustic deliveries, stretching from the onset of “Theme from the Bottom” to “Chalk Dust Torture.” During the segment, the guitarist provided the first acoustic renditions of “What’s Going Through Your Mind,” “Valdese” and “Rift.” Notably, his take on “My Friend, My Friend,” did not include the “Myfe” ending, instead, Anastasio whistled a piece of “Piano Man” while talking to the crowd. Eventually, he brought out Tanski, breaking into duo format for the main frames’ final four songs, “Taste,” “If I Could,” “Reba” and “Sand.”
Saturday’s encore found just the guitarist giving weight to “6 1/2 Minutes,” before bringing out Tanski on “Reba,” sans whistling. The pianist remained clear through the final song, “Fluffhead.” Following the first two nights of Anastasio’s solo acoustic tour, the musician will continue his run tomorrow, March 11 at The F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The concert is sold out.
