An all-star collection of bluegrass players has come together to perform an arrangement of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” Steve Martin and Alison Brown, who released the album Safe, Sensible, and Sane last year, drew together Del McCoury (vocals) Dan Tyminski (vocals, guitar), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Ronnie McCoury (mandolin) and Garry West (bass) for the track. In a statement that accompanied the release, Brown observed, “It’s such a well-known song that my challenge was to come up with an arrangement that would showcase our banjos without giving the song away too soon.” Martin added, “Fortunately, some of the best bluegrass musicians in the world agreed to join us, and here we are, ready to ride.” Brown also told Variety, “Lil Nas obviously didn’t really come from a country space, or as an artist, one doesn’t think of him that way… To me, it’s the tonality of the melody with the flat seven. And the notes and the scale of the melody, they’re very Appalachian. They’re very much like a song that we did a version of called ‘Cluck Old Hen’ on Safe, Sensible, and Sane. That tonality of that modal scale is a very Appalachian kind of sound, so it’s really natural for the banjo to riff off the vibe and the scale of the melody.” Martin, Brown, McCoury and Tyminski all appear in the accompanying video which was filmed at Compass Records in Nashville. Compass released the single, which is now available.
