On Friday, March 7, Sierra Hull released her new album, A Tip Toe High Wire. She followed up the same day at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville, where she dug into the set with select collaborations, including her husband, Justin Moses, Béla Fleck, Molly Tuttle, Stephanie Lambring and Avery Merritt, as well as choice covers turned bluegrass-infused singles.
Hull’s concert began with a series of warm-ups that preluded the official LP run-through, starting with “How Long,” “Bluegrass Concerto, Movement 3, Pray,” “Envy,” and “Beautifully Out of Place.” The onset of song five doubled as the start of the album run-through, beginning with track one, “Boom,” with added accompaniment from guitarist Avery Merritt.
Working through the tracklist in order, Hull seized “Come Out of My Blues” and “Lord, That’s a Long Way,” before bringing out Moses for “Spitfire” and “Truth Be Told.” The latter also featured help from Merritt, who reappeared on mandolin, while Hull handled guitar. The cascade of guests continued: Tuttle added to “Let’s Go,” before Fleck stepped out on “E-Tune,” and eventually swapped with Moses for “Redbird.”
“Haven Hill” represented the final song off A Tip Toe High Wire, and during the concert was trailed by the Daybreak feature, “Bombshell.” Next, Tuttle returned and helped Hull out on a trio of songs: “What Do You Say?,” the Grateful Dead-original turned Hull-covered “Black Muddy River” and “Best Buy.” Fleck returned for the final song of the main frame, assisting his host on his own “Stomping Grounds.”
Hull returned for the night’s encore, her previously released take on Tears for Fears’ “Mad World.” The musician’s next live performance will be on Thursday, March 20 at The Concert Hall at Groton Hill Music Center in Groton, Mass. For tickets and more information, visit www.sierrahull.com/tour.
