Goose returned to Port Chester, N.Y.’s The Capitol Theatre last night, April 9, for the third of four performances in its second annual residency at the historic jam haven. This series marks both the band’s first live engagements of 2024 and the debut of its new lineup, featuring Cotter Ellis in the drummer seat previously filled by Ben Atkind. Following a thrilling launch night and eclipse-themed second show, Tuesday’s performance kept fans captivated with a set adorned with rarities from the band’s ever-expanding canon of originals, plus the live debut of a fresh new entry.
Goose kicked off its third show at the Cap with live standard “Wysteria Lane,” originally released on 2020’s Night Lights and numbering among the selects that demonstrated the band’s new sound with Ellis on the first Chateau Sessions EP. The group grooved on to the iconic “Echo of a Rose,” blazing through the song’s fast version and directly into “Bob Don,” which frontman Rick Mitarotonda famously wrote at 14-years-old. Next, the band revived the stirring rarity “It Burns Within,” marking the track’s eighth-ever performance by Goose and closing a year-long gap since its last staging during the band’s 2023 spring residency at The Capitol Theatre. The excitement continued with “Thatch,” followed by Goose’s live debut of the original “Give It Time” to close out the first set.
After a brief intermission, the band stormed the stage once more with “Red Bird,” which was artfully segued into the fan-favorite “So Ready” through a free-flowing funk jam. This latter entry turned a page to the theme for the remainder of the show, which exclusively included tracks from Goose’s breakthrough 2021 album Shenanigans Nite Club. Following an explosive, ripping run through “Spirit of the Dark Horse,” which also figured into the Chateau Sessions, Goose intricately weaved into its eighth staging of album closer “The Labyrinth,” then brought this mounting energy to a head with a bold and exploratory of “Madhuvan” to conclude set two. The band returned to the stage for an encore with “SOS (Same Old Shenanigans),” bringing the crowd to rise and leaving the fans hungry for more jams in its series closer tonight.
Goose will take the stage at The Capitol Theatre once more tonight, April 10; for more information, visit thecapitoltheatre.com.
