Yesterday, Beyoncé launched a list of collaborators that have added to her highly anticipated Cowboy Carter set, which is due tomorrow, March 29. This is the artist’s second installment of her pandemic-era trilogy series, which began with Renaissance in 2022. Ahead of tomorrow’s LP drop, Dolly Parton took to social media urging folks to listen to her original, “Jolene,” prior to the Beyoncé cover.
While country music’s Iron Butterfly supports Beyoncé’s cover, she used her social media platform to remind followers, “Play the original while you wait for @beyonce’s ‘Jolene.’” The song was released as the first single and title track off Parton’s LP, which goes by the same name. The number dropped on October 15, 1973, and a moderate pop hit at the time, growing in popularity over the years.
Previously this month, Parton alluded to the impending cover while speaking to Knox News, saying, “I think she recorded ‘Jolene’ and I think it’s probably going to be on her country album, which I’m very excited about.”
Beyoncé’s leap into the country orbit comes on the heels of Parton’s genre descent, taking up rock classics on her aptly titled Rockstar set back in November.
In honor of Parton’s request, stream “Jolene” below.
