Trey Anastasio has announced a concert with the National Symphony Orchestra, set to grace the stage of Vienna, Va.’s Wolf Trap on June 25. This one-night engagement marks the pioneering Phish frontman’s first performance with symphonic accompaniment since a 2017 run, renewing the artist’s commitment to expansive, genre-bending classical performance after seven years away.

Anastasio’s history with orchestral performance dates back over two decades to his debut symphonic presentation of The Story of the Ghost classic “Guyute” alongside the Vermont Youth Orchestra in 2000; since this groundbreaking performance, the beloved arrangement has seen periodic revivals with the Colorado Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic, even concluding the artist’s 2004 orchestral album Seis De Mayo. More recently, Anastasio has led such esteemed companies as the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, and previously joined the National Symphony Orchestra in 2013 at its home base of Washington’s Kennedy Center. The artist had slated an orchestral tour for the summer of 2020, which was rescheduled and ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The National Symphony Orchestra performance falls between the conclusion of Anastasio’s Classic TAB spring tour and Phish’s summer tour. The artist will hit the road alongside his backing trio of Dezron Douglas, Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski on May 9 with a performance at Chicago’s The Salt Shed, then continue on through seven further appearances before closing the run with a three-show residency at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Steel on May 21-23. Following his Wolf Trap date, the artist will rejoin Phish on July 19 for its residency-focused summer tour, comprising 26 performances at nine venues through Sept. 1, highlighted by the band’s Mondegreen festival on August 15-18.
