On Halloween, Oct. 31, Billy & the Kids performed at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Calif. During the event, the band landed on a cover of the Grateful Dead’s Built to Last originator, “Blow Away.” The spirited play functioned as the final song during the ensemble’s initial set. A video featuring the cover is available to stream now. Watch below.
Considered a lost late-era Grateful Dead classic, “Blow Away” is associated with the lyrical delivery carried by the late Brent Mydland (co-writer), who put on a high-powered lead adorned with his signature key work to support the emotive lines. Staying true to the original presentation, keyboardist Aron Magner embodied the spirit of late ‘80s and early ‘90s run-throughs, carving out space for feeling that dominated the track.
During the aforementioned concert, the artist lineup was altered to feature a pair of special guest artists/ “Honorary Kids” Brad Barr and Andrew Barr, also known as The Barr Brothers. The visiting players joined the original Grateful Dead backbeat, Bill Kreautzmann, and his band, comprised of Tom Hamilton (JRAD), Aron Magner (Disco Biscuits), and Reed Mathis (Electric Beethoven).
The complete audio of the show is now streaming and available for download on Nugs.net.
