Longtime Tom Petty collaborator Mike Campbell has announced that on Friday, October 20, he and his band, The Dirty Knobs, will put on a concert at The Bellwether in Los Angeles. In a post outlining the gig, and shared by the artist, the band’s namesake said the forthcoming performance will feature two sets, one of which will be pulled from the Heartbreakers’ archive and played on what would have been Petty’s 73rd birthday.
Campbell initially outlined the reasoning for the impending celebration: “It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since we lost our friend and leader. I miss him dearly, as I know you all do. I find comfort and catharsis playing songs we wrote and recorded together on stage, and I thank you all for allowing me that opportunity.”
The guitarist, who co-wrote such hits as “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “You Got Lucky,” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” went on to add the date and location of the concert, and details regarding the format of the show, “The Dirty Knobs will perform a set of our music followed by a set of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers music, dedicated to our brother Tom on his birthday.”
Before concluding his message, Campbell included, “Steve Ferrone will be on the drums for this gig, as he is for all shows on this tour.” Notably, Ferrone provided the backbeat in the Heartbreakers from 1994 to 2017, making the coming together of some of Petty’s longtime friends and collaborators all the more meaningful.
