Last night, June 20, The Avett Brothers took the stage at Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Ill., for a lengthy concert filled with spirit, rhythm and various crowd-pleasing tunes that touched on many of the ensemble’s studio releases. Warren Haynes’ additions to a set of choice covers represented a high point of the night. Of note, the musician and his band, Gov’t Mule, opened the show, adding to the collaborative nature of the performers’ live approach.

The band rolled into their frame with “Laundry Room” from their 2009 album I And Love And You, which set a sentimental mood amongst the crowd. They then jumped around to songs off of more contemporary albums with “Satan Pulls the Strings” and “Live and Die,” before returning to I And Love And You with “The Perfect Square” and eventually the album’s title track.

The band explored nearly every corner of their discography, following up with “Murder in the City” off of their EP The Second Gleam, before playing two songs off of True Sadness. The title track, as well as “I Wish I Was.” The band continued to deliver a variety of tunes, playing “Distraction #74,” “Pretty Girl From Michigan,” “Bleeding White” and “Who Will I Hold.”

Haynes’ arrival boasted excitement from the crowd as he joined his pals. During his time, the Gov’t Mule frontman cracked jokes with Scott Avett and delivered a tasteful cover of Merle Haggard’s “Rainbow Stew,” which has recently been revisited by the host band after a lengthy gap in stage time. In continuation of the sit-in, the group settled on a cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Release” for the final number of the night’s collaboration.

With a wave and peace sign to the crowd and a bow to the band, Haynes left the stage, where The Avett Brothers rounded out their show with four more songs, “Paranoia in B-Flat Major,” “Morning Song,” “Hand-Me-Down Tune” and “Ain’t no Man.” But of course, the show didn’t end there. After a rush of applause from the crowd, the band returned for their encore, “Talk on Indolence” and “No Hard Feelings.”
