Last night, Dec. 31, Chuck Garvey returned to the stage for the first time since he suffered a stroke on Nov. 6, 2021, to celebrate the start of the New Year. The artist stepped out during the final song of the first set and stuck around to assist his moe. bandmates–Al Schnier, Rob Derhak, Vinnie Amico, Jim Loughlin, Michael “Suke” Cerulo and Nate Wilson–and their guests, The Horn Section, on originals and covers in the City of Brotherly Love.

News of Garvey’s comeback subsequently landed on the one-year anniversary of his stroke and was delivered by his bandmates. The jubilant notice followed the group’s three-night stand at Boulder’s Fox Theatre. Moreover, it was revealed that the group would welcome Garvey as a “special guest” during their New Year’s Eve stand in Philadelphia.

The Dec. 31 concert began with an opening set performed by Eggy, then the main act took the stage, stan Garvey and cut into the first numbers of the night: “Spaz Medicine” and a cover of Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening.” The set continued with the original “Jazz Cigarette” and an ensuing take on The Rolling Stones’ “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker).”

Next, the group moved into “Dangerous Game” and “Sensory Deprivation Bank” before the final song of the frame, which saw Garvey resume his rightful place on stage. The number stretched for over 20 minutes and reassured fans that the revered guitarist was back and ready for more. After the set break, they returned to trail through originals: “Not Coming Down,” “Wormwood,” “Okayalright,” “Nebraska” and “Johnny Lineup.”

The group followed up with a pair of covers: The Band’s “Ophelia” and Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon.” Then, As the New Year arrived, the band rushed into “Gonna Fly Now,” otherwise known as The Rocky theme song, as a homage to their host city. Moreover and keeping with the regional theme, moe. performed a tune from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, a rendition of “The Dayman” from the show’s highly rated “The Nightman Cometh” episode.

The evening continued with a first-time take on Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4,” and a set closing performance of “Plane Crash” off 1998’s Tin Cans & Car Tires. Then, the group left the stage before returning one final time to offer the night’s encore, “Blue Jeans Pizza.”

Currently, fan recordings of the first and second sets from moe.’s New Year’s Eve stand are available to stream via YouTube. Watch below.
