On Tuesday night, Trey Anastasio Band and Goose continued their joint arena tour at UPMC Events Center in Carnot-Moon, Pa. Last night’s concert, located just outside Steel City, brought memorable mashups as TAB’s frontman joined the Connecticut jamband during the last two songs of their set. Then, Trey Anastasio Band followed with a frame of music. After running through a selection of tunes, the jammers welcomed members of Goose on “Sand” before Anastasio took the stage during the evening’s encore for a solo acoustic take on “More” and “Backwards Down the Number Line,” which arrived before the finale number, a collaborative take on “Suzy Greenberg.”
Goose kicked off their set outside Pittsburgh with “Butter Rum,” followed by “Creatures” which flowed into “Moby.” The group’s tight jams and eccentric improvisation rolled through “All I Need” before they played an unfinished rendition of “Yeti,” which was cut short in order to make room for a segued in “Get The Funk Out Ma Face,” a number initially played by The Brothers Johnson. For their next pair of tunes, Anastasio stepped out and lent guitar and vocals on “This Old Sea,” which came before a frame-closing take on “The Empress Of Organos.”
After a break, Trey Anastasio Band took the stage, where they worked through several high-energy numbers to the crowd’s amusement. “Everything’s Right” kicked off the frame and arrived before jammed-out renditions of “Mozambique” and “Camel Walk.” Next, “Cayman Review,” “Alive Again,” and “Love Is What We Are” were added to the mix before the ensemble worked through “Gotta Jibboo” and “Olivia.” The set grew as TAB added a fun take on “Simple Twist Up Dave” and “Hey Stanger.”
As the frame progressed and the moon rose over the UPMC Events Center, folks inside were treated to “Money, Love and Change” and “Push On ‘Til the Day.” On the night’s set closing, “Sand,” Anastasio welcomed Goose’s Peter Anspach on keys and Rick Mitarotonda on guitar. Then, a high point of the night arrived when Anastasio descended upon the stage with only his acoustic guitar. The musician strummed and sang “More” and “Backwards Down the Number Line” solo before all the night’s musicians, including members of Goose, soared to the stage to cap the evening with a collaborative take on “Suzy Greenberg.”
After last night’s show outside Pittsburgh, the musicians will take a night off the road before returning to the stage on Nov. 17 at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Va.
