After announcing the release of their surprise Halloween-themed project, Ghoulin’ Around, indie rock unit Futurebirds have followed up by sharing their take on The Rolling Stones’ seminal track “Sympathy for the Devil,” courtesy No Coincidence Records. Listen now

The ensemble revealed the album last week, which included original tracks like the spooky introduction “Welcome to the Party” followed by “Vampire Nights.” The Ghoulin’ Around tracking list also sees an array of covers, including takes on Roky Erickson’s “I Think of Demons” and “I Walked With a Zombie,” and covers of material by Pink Floyd, Diarrhea Planet, and, as previously mentioned, The Rolling Stones.

Guitarist Daniel Womack offered a statement on the band’s cover of the 1968 staple, which appeared on The Rolling Stones’ beloved studio album Beggars Banquet. He added: “When we decided to do a Halloween EP, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ was an obvious choice – a spirited rock-n-roll number by one of our favorite bands of all time.”

Futurebirds’ rendition of the British rock number includes a fun and fiery opening jam, which expands upon the original’s instrumental arrangement with a complimentary twang supplied by pedal steel guitar player Kiffy Myers. Tracking in just under seven minutes, the “Sympathy for the Devil” cover gives listeners a jammed-out take on an old classic just in time for the spooky season.

Next up for the group, they will take a stand at Austin’s Emo Room tonight before an Oct. 29 gig at Echo Hall and Music Lounge in Dallas and, ultimately, a Halloween performance slated for Tannahill’s Tavern in Fort Worth, Texas. For ticket information, visit the band’s official website.
