This past weekend, Greensky Bluegrass hosted their annual Camp Greensky affair in Caledonia, Mich. The band performed several sets and welcomed many musicians on stage during the multi-day event, including Peter Rowan, Lindsay Lou, Bill Payne and Jay Cobb Anderson.
After Thursday’s performance, the band picked things back up on Friday with The Stanley Brothers’ “Pig in a Pen” and followed with the Paul Hoffman penned “Old Barns.” Next, Greensky Bluegrass toyed with “Blood Sucking F(r)iends.”
Then, Lou took the stage and lent her vocals on 2020’s “Grow Together.” The band delivered “Take Cover” before Rowan joined them for the first-ever performance of “Fetch Wood Carry Water.” The guest then stuck around for a take on “Midnight Moonlight,” a tune commonly noodled by Rowan and his Old & In the Way constituents.
Greensky Bluegrass delivered 2021’s “Give a Shit” ahead of a “Worried About The Weather” set closer. The second half of the show got underway with a selection of tunes that began with “Broke Mountain Breakdown” into “Worry For You” and a return to the set opener to cap the epic jam.
Then, the band performed “Lose My Way,” with Lou adding her signature vocals to the arrangement, which segued into a debut of “Hot Hands,” followed by a return to “Lose My Way.” Next, they played “Windshield,” followed by “The Radio Blues” and “Past My Prime,” with Lou taking the stage once more during the final song of the three-part jam. After that, she stuck around for a first-ever take on Jerry Garcia Band’s “Gomorrah” before finishing the set with “Handle With Care.” Finally, for their encore, the band landed on “Who Is Frederico?”
The fun continued on Saturday with a surprise late-night three-set campground get down that began with an acoustic debut of “Pigs on the Wing Part 1.” The set continued with 2012’s “Leap Year,” followed by a pairing of “Wish I Didn’t Know” with “It’s Not Mine Anymore.” They followed up with 2022’s “Streetlight” before “Everything Changed,” which saw the band perform sans Dave Bruzza. Instead, Lou took the stage with her guitar for the debut performance.
The epic set continued with Little Feat’s Payne lending his talents on the piano during “Wings For Wheels” and Jerry Garcia Band-popularized “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox.” The second set got going with a segued pairing of “Before You Bring Out Your Dead” and “Bring Out Your Dead” before launching into 2022’s “Screams.” “Reasons to Stay” bled into “Time” and Pink Floyd’s “Breathe Reprise.”
Then, Lou rejoined the band on a debut of “Starman.” They delivered a pair of originals before Anderson joined on the second set closers, Isaac Hayes’ “Hold On, I’m Coming,” and the Bruzza penned “Kerosene.” The third set began with “Burn Them,” followed by “Fixin To Ruin” and “Bottle Dry.” The Band’s “Shape I’m In” was covered, then Lou sat in for the second-ever take on Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Fishing in the Dark.”
Mississippi Sheiks’ “Sitting On Top of the World” was performed before New Grass Revival’s “Can’t Stop Now.” Then, they played 2008’s “Reverend” and 2005’s “Tied Down.” Greensky Bluegrass landed on “All for Money” as their only encore for the final song of the monstrous late-night campgrounds set.
