The Bad Plus have announced their debut eponymous offering will serve as their 15th studio album and will arrive on Sept. 30 via Edition records. The offering features the latest iteration of the quartet.
“Evolution is necessary for life and creativity,” said The Bad Plus’ founding drummer Dave King and bassist Reid Anderson. “We’ve evolved, but we’re still The Bad Plus.”
The offering comes 21 years after releasing their debut offering as a genre-exploding piano-bass-drums trio. Since then, The Bad Plus have reinvented themselves a few times and most recently with the addition of guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed.
“We feel like we’ve pulled off a magic trick,” King said in a statement. “Changing the lineup from a trio to a quartet with guitar and saxophone that still sounds coherent as The Bad Plus. Having two main composers was our greatest card to play. Our language remains, and that’s the magic.”
THE BAD PLUS sees the group continuing to push convention with a polished and inimitable approach to jazz. The announcement of the album was accompanied by the premiere of its first song, “Motivations II,” which is available now.
The group will celebrate its new album and reinvention with a multi-natonal live touring schedule, which started yesterday evening and continues tonight at Boston’s cullers Jazz Club. They’ll then headline tours and festivals in North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, and more.
Highlights include a six-night run at New York City’s world-famous Blue Note Jazz Club on July 19-24 as well as much anticipated double bills alongside visionary guitarist Julian Lage at Los Angeles, CA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall on Oct. 14 and New York’s Webster Hall on Dec. 1. Additional dates will be announced soon.
