Yesterday, Vulfpeck’s bandleader and drummer Jack Stratton took to Instagram to address the clamor around a highly desired full-length klezmer album.

Klezmer is an instrumental musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe which has elements of dance tunes, ritual melodies and virtuosic improvisations; Stratton shared that he, along with Josh “Socalled” Dolgin (piano, accordion, vocals) and Michael Winograd (clarinet) will perform at Cain Park in his hometown of Cleveland Heights, Ohio on June 26. The live performance will be turned into a full-length LP, much like Vulfpeck’s iconic Madison Square Garden show.

Stratton and company will perform under the moniker Yiddish Pirat which translates to Jewish Pirate. The performance in Ohio is not the first time the trio have dipped their toes into the culture of Klezmer: They headlined the Workmen’s Circle Yiddish Concert in the Park in 2014, Stratton has performed with the Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band a handful of times at Cain Park during their performances there over the last 20 years and the Yiddishe Pirat trio first played together at KlezKanada – a Canadian klezmer conference – back in 2007.

“Ever since Vulfpeck played Madison Square Garden we’ve been receiving the same question over and over again,” Stratton said in the Instagram video. “Every time I post, 50 comments: ‘when is Vulf Records making a full-length klezmer album?’ I have caved under the pressure.”

Yiddish Pirat’s show will be completely free. Learn more here.
