Rhiannon Giddens has announced a four-part Perspectives concert series as a part of Carnegie Hall’s 2022-2023 season. The sequence of shows will shed light on the shared global history of musical traditions while also emphasizing Black influence on American music.
The series begins on Oct. 15, when multi-instrumentalist and frequent collaborator Francesco Turrisi joins Giddens at Weill Recital Hall for an intimate concert. The performance will draw influence from diverse musical sources, including Italian folk music, early Baroque songs and traditional arrangements of African American hymns and spirituals.
The following month, on Nov. 4, Giddens will welcome banjo players Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell for the second Perspectives show, titled Songs of Our Native Daughters. Again, Giddens and her collaborators will pull from historical sources and personal narratives to present stories of resistance and hope from a strong Black female perspective.
Then on Jan. 24, Giddens will once again share the stage with Francesco Turrisi. Bassist Jason Sypher will also join the duo. Together they will perform songs from their Grammy award-winning album, They’re Calling Me Home, which was recorded in Ireland during the COVID-19 lockdown.
The final show of the four-part series will be held at Zankel Hall on March 10. The performance is titled Indigenous Connections and will feature women and nonbinary members of the Silkroad Ensemble and Tuscarora/Taino songwriter Pura Fé. Together, they will play a selection of music that highlights indigenous North America.
