Last night, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros performed at the Tivoli Theatre, in Chattanooga, Tenn. The string-heavy performance was flush with tour debuts, Grateful Dead favorites and a way array of covers.
Weir and the ensemble–comprised of Don Was (bass), Jay Lane (drums), Alex Kelly (cello), Mads Tolling (violin), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), Brian Switzer (trumpet), Adam Theis (trombone) and Sheldon Brown (woodwind)–opened with the Grateful Dead’s “Hell in a Bucket,” which was followed by Jerry Garcia’s “Loser.” Next came the Dead’s “I Need a Miracle” into the band’s tour debut of Willie Dixon’s “Wang Dang Doodle” back into “I Need a Miracle (reprise).” They continued another with tour debut with a cover of “Sugaree.” Next came the Dead’s Tennessee anthem “Tennessee Jed,” and a cover of Little Feat’s “Easy to Slip.” They closed the first set with “Throwing Stones.”
Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros opened the second set with a cover of John Phillips’ “Me and My Uncle” before moving into “Greatest Story Ever Told,” a song originally released 50 years previously on Weir’s Ace, and then Ratdog original “Two Djinn.” Next, the group played the first “Playing in the Band” of the evening, which flowed into the debut cover of Jean-Luc Ponty’s 1976 “New Country,” without a brass section highlighting the string players immense skill. After some applause, the band returned to “Playing in the Band” before covering a cover of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” > “Playing in the Band (reprise)” > their tour debut of the Dead’s “Black Peter.” Without missing a beat they jammed from “Black Peter” into “U.S. Blues” to close the set.
For their encore, the ensemble finished the night off with one more tour debut, a cover of the Dead’s “Black Muddy River.
