On Friday evening, Jeff Tweedy took his current tour, which follows the release of his new solo effort, the sprawling triple-disc record Twilight Override, to the Uptown Theatre in Napa, Calif. The appearance trailed Tweedy and his family band’s two-night stand at The Fillmore in San Francisco, where they introduced covers of the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and more into encore slots. During their follow-up, Tweedy invited two guests for separate sit-ins during the wine country finale: Micah Nelson and Molly Sarlé.
Friday’s encore began with the Warmer cut, “Family Ghost,” striking material off Tweedy’s third solo album, before reviving his current motif of debuting covers and positioning them as the central focus of each concert’s finale. This played out as a first-time run-through of Norma Tanega’s “Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog,” with assistance from Sarlé. Notably, Friday’s initial guest has shown long-standing admiration for her host, who has also expressed his own regard for her talents–Sarlé’s folk trio, Mountain Man, opened for Wilco in 2019, joining the band on stage and beyond.
Sarlé remained for another song, this time leading the band through her own “Human.” Previously, Tweedy covered the track on two occasions in 2020, both of which were private events, making Friday’s play a first for the public. As a welcome follow-up, Tweedy brought out one final guest, Micah Nelson. Tweedy and Nelson have crossed paths on occasion, including Farm Aid events, where they covered “The Weight” as recently as 2024. During Friday’s concert, Nelson paid respect to his Chrome Hearts bandleader, Neil Young, by assisting Tweedy and company on a debut cover of “Are You Ready for the Country.”
