To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Zappa and the Mothers’ 1971 two-night run at the Fillmore East and a cherished period in Zappa’s legacy, Zappa Records/UMe has released a new eight-disc box set – Mothers 1971.
The lineup during the Fillmore run included Ian Underwood (winds/keyboards), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), Jim Pons (bass/vocals/dialog), Bob Harris (keyboards/vocals). It was rounded out by Howard Kaylan (lead vocals/dialog) and Mark Volman (lead vocals/dialog), aka Flo & Eddie of The Turtles, and special guest Don Preston.
The release was overseen by the Zappa Trust and produced by Zappa’s son, Ahmet Zappa. The collection contains Zappa’s shows on June 5 and 6 of 1971 at the Fillmore East, including the evening with famed John Lennon and Yoko Ono encore. For the first time, fans can listen to the raw ingredients to mix the seminal live concept album Fillmore East – June 1971.
Additionally, the box set contains Zappa and the Mothers’ full performance at the Rainbow Theater in London on Dec. 10, 1971. Although it is generally acknowledged to be musically outstanding, this concert is infamous in Zappa history as it ended when a deranged fan attacked the musician mid-performance, pushing him from the stage and causing him to fall 12 feet to the concrete floor of the orchestra pit below. Onlookers feared he had been killed, but Zappa, though he did sustain severe injuries with permanent impacts, thankfully lived on to impart many more years of music.
The collection is rounded out with the original rare single for “Tears Began To Fall” and its non-album-track B-side “Junier Mintz Boogie,” marking its first re-release in 50 years and digital debut, as well as a homemade radio spot and related outtakes.
Other features of the set include a hybrid concert drawn from June 1-3, 1971 performances in Scranton and Harrisburg, Penn., bonus tracks and material, as well as an in-depth interview with integral Mothers band member Ian Underwood conducted by Ahmet Zappa in the Mothers 1971 booklet.
